How catching works in PokeMMO

PokeMMO uses the generation 3/4 capture formula with its own values: its ball multipliers are weaker than in the main games, and it changed the catch rate of 46 species. Four things decide your odds:

a = (3·HPmax − 2·HP) / (3·HPmax) × rate × ball × status
P ≈ a / 255   (a ≥ 255 → 100 %)

the species' catch rate (3 for the hardest, 255 for the easiest; alphas have their own), the HP left (1 HP is about 3 times better than full HP), the status (sleep and freeze ×2, paralysis, burn and poison ×1.5) and the ball.

Example: a Pokémon with a catch rate of 45

A Poké Ball at full HP catches it 5.9% of the time. At 1 HP: 17.6%. At 1 HP and asleep: 35.3%, and 70.6% with an Ultra Ball. With a catch rate of 3, the same Ultra Ball only gets 4.7%, and a Timer Ball from turn 11 gets 9.4%.

Which ball to throw

  • Quick Ball: ×5, but only on turn 1. The best opening throw.
  • Timer Ball: ×1 on turn 1, +0.3 per turn, ×4 from turn 11. The best for long fights.
  • Dusk Ball: ×2.5 in caves and at night.
  • Net Ball: ×3.5 on Water and Bug Pokémon.
  • Dive Ball: ×3.5 when surfing, fishing or underwater.
  • Nest Ball: up to ×4 on low-level Pokémon (7 − 0.2 × (level − 1)).
  • Ultra Ball ×2 and Great Ball ×1.5: the all-rounders.
  • Love Ball ×8, Moon Ball ×4 and Fast Ball ×4: very strong in the right case (same line and opposite gender, Moon Stone evolutions, base Speed of 100 or more).

What is the best Poké Ball in PokeMMO?

It depends on the fight: a Quick Ball on turn 1, then a Dusk Ball in a cave or at night, a Net Ball on Water and Bug Pokémon, and a Timer Ball once the fight passes about 8 turns. Pick the Pokémon above to see every ball ranked for its catch rate.

Is a catch rate calculator exact for PokeMMO?

This one uses PokeMMO's own catch rates and ball multipliers, not the main games' ones. A few balls whose formula PokeMMO does not publish (Repeat, Heavy, Level, Fast Ball) are marked as approximations, and the Dream Ball is left out.

How do you catch an alpha in PokeMMO?

Alphas have their own catch rate, much lower than the species' one, shown when you tick Alpha. Some alphas only come from raids or events and cannot be caught in the wild.

Should you put the Pokémon to sleep or paralyse it?

Sleep: it doubles your odds, where paralysis, burn and poison only give ×1.5. Bring it to 1 HP first, with False Swipe for example.
