Alpha Pokémon in PokeMMO

✖

Alpha Pokémon are rare versions of some species that appear for a short time, one at a time, somewhere in the world. Catching one takes timing, the right balls and often a bit of luck.

This guide explains when alphas appear, why they are so hard to catch, where else they come from, and the one rule that matters if you want to breed them.

When alphas appear

An in-game day lasts 6 real hours, and there is one alpha per in-game day. That gives four slots per real day, starting at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC.

  • The alpha appears at a random moment in the first 4 h 45 of its slot.
  • It then stays 75 minutes, so it is always gone before the next slot starts.
  • So if no alpha has shown up yet and the slot is still in its first 4 h 45, it can appear at any moment.

The Alphas window on the home page shows the last alpha reported by Alphapedia and by MMOBreeder players, and when the next one can appear, in your time zone. Signed-in players can report an alpha they see.

Catching an alpha

Alphas have their own catch rate, much lower than their species'. On the PokeMMO wiki, most alphas have a catch rate of 10, and some are even lower. Compare: many common Pokémon have 190 or 255.

The catch rate calculator gives the real chance of each ball with PokeMMO's own multipliers: tick Alpha to use the alpha catch rate. Status conditions and low HP matter even more than usual at these rates.

Which Pokémon can be alpha

Not every species has an alpha. Some families appear as alphas in the wild, others only through raids and events, and some cannot be caught in the wild at all. Each Pokémon's page in the Pokédex says whether it has an alpha and what its alpha catch rate is.

  • Many raids reward an alpha of their boss.
  • Seasonal events can give alphas too: the Halloween wisp hunt ends with alpha rewards.

Breeding alphas

An egg is alpha only when both parents are alpha, and then it always is. If one parent is Ditto, it has to be an alpha Ditto too. Every base Pokémon of a breeding tree must therefore be alpha, which is why competitive alphas cost so much.

The breeding planner has an alpha mode: it only uses your alphas and prices the missing ones as alphas. The breeding guide explains how many Pokémon each target needs.

Track your alphas

My Pokédex has a separate alpha Dex for each region, next to the normal and shiny ones.

Frequently asked questions

What time do alphas spawn in PokeMMO?

One alpha per 6-hour slot, starting at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC. It appears in the first 4 h 45 of the slot and stays 75 minutes.

What is the alpha catch rate in PokeMMO?

Much lower than the species' own: 10 for most alphas on the PokeMMO wiki, and some are lower still. Some alphas cannot be caught in the wild at all.

How do you breed an alpha Pokémon?

Both parents must be alpha, Ditto included. The egg is then always alpha.
