PokeMMO breeding guide
Breeding is how you get a Pokémon with the IVs and the nature you want in PokeMMO. It is also where most of the game's money goes, because the rules are strict: both parents are consumed each time you collect an egg.
This guide explains the rules as PokeMMO applies them, which are not always those of the main Pokémon games, and how many Pokémon each target really costs. When you know what you want, the breeding planner works out the cheapest path from the Pokémon you already own.

How the Daycare works
You leave two compatible Pokémon at the Daycare and collect an egg. In exchange, the Daycare keeps both parents: a Pokémon can only be used once. That is why a breeding project is a tree: every Pokémon at the top is the result of two others, which are each the result of two more, and so on.
- The egg is of the mother's species (its first stage), or of the parent that is not Ditto.
- You can pay to choose the egg's gender. The rarer the gender in that species, the higher the price; it is free when the species has only one gender.
- Babies such as Pichu do not breed: it is the evolved member of the family that lays the egg.
Passing down IVs
For each stat, the egg gets the IV of one parent or a value in between. Two things make it certain:
- An IV both parents share is guaranteed. Two parents with 31 in Speed always give 31 in Speed.
- A Power item guarantees the stat of the parent that holds it: Power Weight (HP), Power Bracer (Attack), Power Belt (Defense), Power Lens (Sp. Atk), Power Band (Sp. Def) and Power Anklet (Speed).
So to make a Pokémon with k perfect IVs, you cross two Pokémon with k−1 perfect IVs that share k−2 of them, each one holding the Power item of the stat the other one lacks. Every perfect IV doubles the number of Pokémon needed:
| Target | Base Pokémon | Breeds |
|---|---|---|
| 2×31 | 2 | 1 |
| 3×31 | 4 | 3 |
| 4×31 | 8 | 7 |
| 5×31 | 16 | 15 |
| 5×31 + nature | 32 | 31 |
These numbers assume you start from Pokémon with a single 31 each. Pokémon you already own with two or three perfect IVs cut whole branches of the tree: that is exactly what the planner looks for in your box.
Getting the right nature
The nature passes with an Everstone held by one parent. That parent cannot hold a Power item at the same time, so the nature costs one more level in the tree: a natured 5×31 comes from a natured 4×31 holding the Everstone and a 5×31 holding the Power item of the missing stat.
The cheapest way is to put the nature in early, on one of the base Pokémon, rather than on the last cross.
Who can breed with whom
PokeMMO has its own rules here, and they matter when you choose your base Pokémon:
| Pokémon | Can breed with | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Male and female species | a male of any species sharing an egg group, or Ditto | Garchomp |
| Genderless | another genderless Pokémon of the same family, or Ditto | Voltorb with Electrode |
| Male only | Ditto only | Tauros |
| Legendary and mythical | cannot breed | Entei, Darkrai |
| Ditto | anything above, but not another Ditto |
Because the egg takes the mother's species, a parent of another species is always the father. Each species' egg groups and breeding partners are on its page in the Pokédex.
Egg moves
In PokeMMO, both parents pass their moves: the egg gets any move known by either parent, as long as its species can learn it. In the fifth-generation games only the father did.
In a breeding tree, every intermediate cross is of the target species, so a move known by any base Pokémon (except Ditto) can travel up to the final one. When no compatible Pokémon learns the move itself, you chain it through another species first. Many egg moves of the main games became tutor moves in PokeMMO: the egg moves list shows what is left for each family.
Alpha and shiny eggs
- An egg is alpha only when both parents are alpha, and then it always is. If one parent is Ditto, it has to be an alpha Ditto too.
- Two shiny parents always give a shiny egg.
Both rules make every base Pokémon of the tree count, which is why alpha and shiny breeding projects are so expensive. More in the alpha guide and the shiny hunting guide.
Plan before you buy
- List the Pokémon you already own: the import from PokeMMO reads them from the game's export.
- Choose the target, its perfect IVs and its nature in the breeding planner.
- Compare the plans: the planner prices every missing Pokémon and item at today's GTL prices.
- Follow the tree from the bottom up, and keep the Power items and Everstones the plan tells each parent to hold.
Frequently asked questions
How many Pokémon do I need for a 5x31 in PokeMMO?
16 base Pokémon with one perfect IV each, for 15 breeds. With a nature on top, 32 Pokémon and 31 breeds. Pokémon you already own with several perfect IVs reduce that number.
Can legendary Pokémon breed in PokeMMO?
No. Legendary and mythical Pokémon cannot breed. Genderless Pokémon, on the other hand, can breed with another genderless Pokémon of their own family, or with Ditto.
Do both parents pass egg moves in PokeMMO?
Yes. The egg gets any move known by either parent, as long as its species can learn it.
